The House of Commons has passed this new legislation and now it’s going to he House of Lords for further consideration and debate. This legislation gives authorities rights to intercept Internet traffic and communications which the Government considers is essential in fighting crime and terrorism. The application of this law will be wide including cloud providers and ISPs. It appears that the much criticised provision requiring companies such as Apple to build in backdoors to their encryption has been dropped but there will be lots of close study to examine the impact of this new legislation on business and the public. Expect further changes from the House of Lords before the legislation comes into force in 2017.
UK MPs tonight voted 444-69 in favor of passing the Investigatory Powers Bill, aka the Snoopers’ Charter, thus sending the draft law off to the House of Lords to debate.
